Addiction issues

Addiction issues in the workplace pose a significant risk to both the health and safety of employees and the continuity and reputation of the organization. Whether it concerns alcohol, drugs, gaming or medication use, insufficient attention to this theme can lead to increased absenteeism, reduced productivity and legal risks. Employers face the challenge of ensuring a safe and healthy working environment, where addiction problems are identified in a timely manner and adequately addressed. A proactive approach, consisting of clear policies, targeted interventions and preventive training, is essential to minimize risks and support staff.

An effective ADM policy (Alcohol, Drugs and Medicines) forms the basis for a safe working environment. In addition, it is important that managers and employees have the right knowledge and skills to recognize signals of addiction and act adequately. Timely interventions and professional guidance can limit the impact of addiction problems and allow employees to be integrated into the labor process more quickly and effectively.

Radvance

Policy

  • Development of an ADM policy in cooperation with the Human Resources Department, aligned with existing human resources policies and taking into account current laws and regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
  • Expert guidance by specialists in labour law and privacy legislation, to ensure that the policy complies with the latest legal standards.

Intervention

  • In case of suspicions of substance use, a conversation between employer and employee is facilitated, with the aim of providing the employee with appropriate assistance as quickly as possible and reintegrating him into the labor process.
  • In the case of a positive test, an intervention interview is conducted to assess the seriousness of the situation and to propose an assistance process. If necessary, reference is made to professional care providers, such as nationally operating mental health authorities, without waiting times for the organization.

Training of executives

  • An active training course, based on experiential expertise, which provides knowledge about (early) signalling addiction problems, conversation techniques and internal procedures.
  • The training includes the following topics:
    • Information on different agents and their effects
    • The phases of substance use and the transition to addiction
    • Recognizing and early identifying addiction problems
    • Internal procedures and protocols
    • Treatment of practical cases
    • Training in the use of a checklist for suspicions of addiction
    • Information about providing and seeking help

Employee information

  • Active education, based on experiential expertise, which informs employees about the risks and consequences of substance use.
  • The information includes the following topics:
    • Voors and cons of substance use
    • What addiction and problematic use entails and how to recognize it
    • The importance of an alcohol, drug and drug-free workplace
    • The rules and consequences of violations within the organization
    • Possibilities for help, both for yourself and for colleagues

Finalization and benefits
A clear ADM policy and targeted training ensure a safe and healthy working environment, in which addiction problems are identified in a timely manner and adequately addressed. For employers, this means a decrease in absenteeism, a lower chance of legal risks and better compliance with laws and regulations. Employees experience a safer working environment, more clarity about the rules and procedures, and know where they can go for help. Through timely interventions and professional guidance, the impact of addiction issues is limited, contributing to a productive, healthy and safe working environment.
